Junior Crew with Holyoke Rows

The team will practice 5 days a week from 3:15-5:15 and participate in local regattas (rowing races).  As a member of our Junior Crew you will learn the basic rowing stroke, train for races, and be challenged to work together as one crew.  While a large focus is on training for competition our main goal is to have fun, build team spirit and experience the sport of rowing.  Holyoke Rows is open to students from any local school.  Our mission is to provide a high quality rowing experience at an affordable price.

Introduction to High Performance Paddling

Youth and Adult

Thursday evenings in September we will be holding an Intermediate Kayak Clinic from 4:30 to 5:30 to give recreational paddlers a chance to try faster types of kayaks, canoes and paddles. This will give ample time for paddlers to become comfortable in these types of crafts and be given an opportunity to race at our October 2nd event. Boats, paddles and life jackets will be provided. These clinics are free to Holyoke Rows members and also to youth paddlers (17 and under). Clinics are $20 for non member adults. Please RSVP to Mark or Alicia at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it at least 24 hours before clinics as there is a limited supply of equipment.

Thursdays in September 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th.

New Clinic: The Troubled Kayak

Sooner or later, it's going to happen: you're going to find yourself on the outside of your kayak looking in. Or upside down. Or otherwise not going where you want and need to be.

Our troubled kayak series will teach you how to renter your kayak with or without assistance, as well as paddle strokes and other techniques for challenging conditions.

Clinics will be held every Saturday, July 24 through August 14, $45 members/$55 nonmembers with all equipment included. Expect a full 6-8 hour day on the water.

For more details, and to sign up, email trips@holyokerows.org.

September Third Sunday trip

Sunday September 19 we'll head north to Cornish NH. We'll put in next to the covered bridge connecting Cornish to Windsor VT, but before we do we'll walk from the put-in to visit the Augustus St Gaudens National Historic Site. St Gaudens was a sculptor known for his Civil War commemorative work. Back on the river, we'll paddle 10 miles south, meandering past corn fields, woods and hills,  taking out at Ashley Ferry State Park. Foliage in this area should be near peak. Cornish is about two hours from Holyoke, so participants will be encouraged to car pool.

Sunday August 15 we'll start at the boathouse and head south on the Connecticut, expolring tributaries (Chicopee and Westfield) on the way to Enfield.

Cost will be $10 for Hoyoke Rows members, and $40 for non-members. For information or to sign up, call the boathouse at 413-322-5647, or email ottertales@holyokerows.org. You can also get more information, including pictures of last year's trips here.
