Mission

Holyoke Rows is a non-profit community organization located at Jones Ferry River Access Center along the Connecticut River in Holyoke. We run youth and adult learn to row programs and we offer adaptive rowing programs for people with disabilities. We run summer youth programs with area agencies and have been developing high school crew programs for boys and girls in the Holyoke area. We have an active club membership of experienced rowers.

Holyoke Rows believes in the value of sports. Sporting activities help young people maintain interest in school and keep them connected to their community. Sports help youth learn about their own strengths and limits. Rowing is a sport that fosters leadership skills within each individual as well as a sense of community as rowers are forced to work together and to rely upon each other in order to have a successful rowing experience.

Holyoke Rows' Mission is to reach beyond the traditional rowing population and bring rowing into the lives of youth and adults who would benefit most from the opportunities that rowing offers. We hope that at our boathouse, everyone learns to row and everyone learns to row together.

New Clinic: The Troubled Kayak

Sooner or later, it's going to happen: you're going to find yourself on the outside of your kayak looking in. Or upside down. Or otherwise not going where you want and need to be.

Our troubled kayak series will teach you how to renter your kayak with or without assistance, as well as paddle strokes and other techniques for challenging conditions.

Clinics will be held every Saturday, July 24 through August 14, $45 members/$55 nonmembers with all equipment included. Expect a full 6-8 hour day on the water.

For more details, and to sign up, email trips@holyokerows.org.

September Third Sunday trip

Sunday September 19 we'll head north to Cornish NH. We'll put in next to the covered bridge connecting Cornish to Windsor VT, but before we do we'll walk from the put-in to visit the Augustus St Gaudens National Historic Site. St Gaudens was a sculptor known for his Civil War commemorative work. Back on the river, we'll paddle 10 miles south, meandering past corn fields, woods and hills,  taking out at Ashley Ferry State Park. Foliage in this area should be near peak. Cornish is about two hours from Holyoke, so participants will be encouraged to car pool.

Sunday August 15 we'll start at the boathouse and head south on the Connecticut, expolring tributaries (Chicopee and Westfield) on the way to Enfield.

Cost will be $10 for Hoyoke Rows members, and $40 for non-members. For information or to sign up, call the boathouse at 413-322-5647, or email ottertales@holyokerows.org. You can also get more information, including pictures of last year's trips here.
